Outdoor vs Indoor Wedding Ceremonies in Ireland-What Should You Choose?

July 18, 2026ShellyBlog

For years, outdoor wedding ceremonies have been the dream. We scroll through beautiful weddings in Spain, Portugal and Italy, with couples exchanging vows under blue skies surrounded by sunshine. And as Ireland enjoys warmer summers thanks to our changing climate, more couples are asking the question:

“Should we have our ceremony outdoors?”

The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might think.

The Appeal of an Outdoor Ceremony

There’s no denying it—an outdoor ceremony can be absolutely magical. Natural light, beautiful gardens, views and the feeling of being surrounded by nature all make for a stunning setting. If the weather behaves, it can create a truly unforgettable experience.

But unlike many European destinations, Ireland isn’t quite geared up for outdoor ceremonies in the same way. While we may be getting more warm, sunny days, we also need to think about how those conditions affect everyone attending your wedding—not just the photographs.

Think About Your Guests

One thing couples often overlook is guest comfort.

Most male guests will be wearing shirts, ties and jackets. Many women will also be dressed for a formal occasion. These outfits aren’t designed for sitting in direct sunshine for 30 or 40 minutes.

A warm summer’s day can quickly become uncomfortable. Guests may become overheated, feel faint or simply struggle to enjoy the ceremony. If you’re close to water, insects such as mosquitoes or horseflies can also become an unexpected distraction.

And here’s something people don’t often consider…

If you’re worrying about your guests throughout the ceremony, it shows. As a Wedding Celebrant in Ireland, I can tell you that your concern can be reflected in your expressions and, ultimately, in your photographs. Instead of being fully present in the moment, you’re wondering whether everyone is comfortable.

If You Choose an Outdoor Ceremony…

An outdoor ceremony can work beautifully with a little planning. Here are three simple tips to help everyone enjoy it.

1. Keep Your Guests Hydrated

Have chilled bottles of water or a water station available before the ceremony begins. It’s a small touch that makes a huge difference on a warm day.

2. Be Prepared for Insects

If your venue is near lakes, rivers or woodland, have insect repellent available for guests. Hopefully it won’t be needed, but everyone will appreciate having the option.

3. Keep It Short and Stay Shaded

A concise ceremony is often the most enjoyable. If you’re the couple standing in full sun, especially the bride in several layers of fabric, make sure there’s some form of shade available. A discreet parasol or umbrella can keep you comfortable without taking away from the occasion.

Don’t Overlook the Benefits of an Indoor Ceremony

While outdoor ceremonies are beautiful, indoor ceremonies offer something that’s often underestimated: comfort.

Everyone is relaxed, seated comfortably and protected from whatever the Irish weather decides to do. Many venues are climate-controlled, so whether it’s unexpectedly warm or there’s a sudden shower, nobody has to worry.

The atmosphere is calm, everyone can focus on the ceremony itself, and you’ll feel more at ease knowing your guests are comfortable.

And here’s the best part…

Choosing an indoor ceremony doesn’t mean missing out on beautiful outdoor photographs.

You can still have your drinks reception outside, wander the gardens with your photographer, enjoy the sunshine and capture all those natural, relaxed images you’ve been dreaming of. In many ways, you get the best of both worlds—the comfort of an indoor ceremony and the beauty of Ireland’s landscape for your portraits.

The Best Choice Is the One That Fits Your Day

There isn’t a right or wrong answer.

If you’ve always dreamed of saying your vows outdoors, then absolutely go for it—but plan carefully and put guest comfort first.

If you’re leaning towards an indoor ceremony, don’t feel you’re compromising. In fact, you may find that everyone is more relaxed, your timeline flows more smoothly, and you still enjoy every bit of the beautiful Irish scenery afterwards.

At the end of the day, your guests won’t remember whether your ceremony was inside or outside nearly as much as they’ll remember how they felt. A comfortable, happy wedding is always a memorable one—and those genuine smiles are what make the very best photographs.
